Opioid‐limiting legislation and prescribing habits of otolaryngologists among Medicare beneficiaries

Objectives To identify changes in otolaryngologists' opioid prescribing trends for Medicare beneficiaries associated with the enactment of state laws that limit duration prescriptions to 3–7 days years 2016 and 2017 United States. Methods Through Centers Medicaid Services (CMS) database, we retrieved data on enrollment total prescribed number drugs codeine/acetaminophen, hydrocodone/acetaminophen, oxycodone HCl, oxycodone/acetaminophen, tramadol by each otolaryngologist prescriber 13 states from January 2013 December 2019. We modeled using linear spline regression models controlled beneficiaries' state-level socio-demographic characteristics' fixed effects. Results Across states, all five opioids per beneficiary declined 8.35 (SD = 12.61). The most commonly type otolaryngologists during 5-year study period was HCl (28.72 days/beneficiary) followed (19.99 days/beneficiary). All had declines prescription over this time window higher rates decline following law passage. Four experienced statistically significant after year legislation passage (p < .05). Some greatest inclines prior also reductions enactment. Conclusions Opioid practices may have been affected limiting passed 2017. Level Evidence 4.
